The Bangladesh Homeopathic Medical Education Bill, 2023 was passed by parliament on Thursday, aiming to bring homeopathic medicine system in order.

State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain, in absence of Health Minister Zahid Maleque, moved the Bill and it was passed by voice vote.

Currently, there is a homeopathic board in the country and it would be replaced by a council.

As per the bill, the council shall be governed by a 17-member Board of Directors. This council will supervise the homoeopathy treatment, services and medicines.

There will be an executive committee comprising of 10 members.

The bill said that the council would register the homeopathy physicians and maintain a registry book in this regard and it would be updated from time to time.

The bill seeks to replace Bangladesh Homeopathic Practitioners Ordinance,1983.

The homeopathy medical system was created in 1796 by Samuel Hahnemann. Hahnemann rejected the mainstream medicine of the late 18th century as irrational and inadvisable because it was largely ineffective and often harmful.

During the 1970s, homoeopathy made a significant comeback, with sales of some homoeopathic products increasing tenfold.
