The Industrial Police has urged the readymade garment (RMG) and textile factory owners to clear May wages and festival bonuses before the beginning of Eid-ul-Azha holidays, in accordance with the government decision.

They also requested the workers to demonstrate responsible behavior regarding due wages, allowances and bonuses ahead of Eid celebrations.

Industrial Police Additional IGP Md Mahbubur Rahman, BPM (Bar) made the calls at a view exchange with representatives from the RMG and textile sectors, government directorates, and sector leaders at the city’s specialised police headquarters on Saturday.

Mahbubur pointed out, “If the manufacturers pay the wages and bonus on time, the law-and-order situation in the industrial sector will remain normal, and the highways will remain safe.

“The relevant organisations will take appropriate action against the owners of the factory units who stay abroad without paying wages, bonuses and allowances to the workers on time.”

Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, all forms of leave for the industrial police have been canceled and all members are carrying out their responsibilities with professionalism and sincerity, he said, adding that they have reviewed the current status of wage payments in different factories.

The Industrial Police requested the owners and authority concerned to take proper measures if any factory unit fails to pay, and urged to set up Eid holidays on the basis of owner-employee agreement.

The law enforcers also urged the owners to not to reduce or lay off workers before Eid without reasonable cause, and requested awareness so that forces with ill-motives cannot deteriorate the law-and-order situation.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Vice President Md Nasir Uddin said, “There will be more benefits if all relevant institutions work together professionally.

“The BGMEA will take stricter action if any factory under the organisation fails to pay wages and bonuses on time before Eid. There is no alternative to mutual coordination of all parties regarding the timely payment of wages and bonuses to the workers.”

At the meeting, Superintendents of Police from all zones of the Industrial Police presented the overall picture of factories.

Representatives from BEPZA, DIFE, and DoL assured mutual cooperation with the Industrial Police to ensure the payment of salaries and allowances to the workers before Eid-ul-Azha celebrations.
