Petrobangla takes steps to make temp staff permanent

The Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation, commonly known as Petrobangla, has taken steps to make the jobs of temporary employees permanent across its 13 subsidiary companies. Petrobangla has sent a letter regarding this initiative to the secretary of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.

According to a copy of the letter obtained by The Business Post, Petrobangla aims to secure permanent employment for all employees currently working on outsourcing, master roll, contractual and daily wage bases, while relaxing the age limit within their respective organisations.

Following this proposal, Petrobangla's Chairman Zanendra Nath Sarker has sent a letter to Secretary Md Nurul Alam, requesting further action on the matter.

Petrobangla’s Director (Administration), Md Altaf Hossain, told The Business Post that those working on a temporary basis at Petrobangla and its subsidiary companies want their jobs to be made permanent, even staging protests over the issue. In response, Petrobangla has moved forward with efforts to make these jobs permanent.

He noted that this initiative would proceed once it receives government policy approval. However, the final decision now rests with the government.

He said that if the process—making all temporary employees’ jobs permanent—is approved, it is unclear how long it will take to implement, but the move has provided some hope to the protesters seeking job security.

Since January this year, a policy titled “Centralised Candidate Selection for Recruitment of Manpower for Existing Vacancies in the 9th and 10th Grades of Petrobangla and its 13 Subsidiary Companies” has been formulated.

This policy was approved by the Petrobangla Board during its 577th meeting held on August 30. Additionally, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has also approved this policy.
