Bangladesh Ceramic Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BCMEA) has requested the government not to increase the price of fuel gas.

“The Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) took a plan to increase gas prices. This is the 8th time in the last 10 years that the government has planned to increase gas prices by an average of 116 per cent. Our production cost will increase 18-20 per cent if the decision is implemented,” said BCMEA President Sirajul Islam Mollah while speaking at a press conference on Monday at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity.

Sirajul Islam Mollah also said the ceramic industry is gas dependent. Keeping it in mind, the government should take steps to protect the industry.

“The ceramic industry will suffer the most due to increasing gas prices. All businesses and general people also will suffer immensely following the inability of domestic products to compete with foreign products in the price competition,” he added.

He also mentioned that there are around 5 lakh people who are directly and indirectly involved in the sector.
