Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina – during a cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Sunday – ordered authorities concerned to secure Geographical Indication (GI) certification for local products.

Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain made the disclosure at a press briefing after the meeting.

When asked whether the prime minister has given any further instructions, the cabinet secretary said, “She directed immediate action for GI certifications, and asked the officials concerned to actively initiate the GI registration process for eligible prospects.

Mahbub said, “Three product journals have been published. Copies of them have been given to the prime minister, alongside GI recognition certificates of Tangail Saree, Rasgolla of Gopalganj, and Amrit Sagar banana of Narsingdi.”

Mahbub said a discussion with the Indian government about the GI certification of Tangail Saree has been held. “If there is such a conflicted thing, there is an international organization for that.
