Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana visited Padma Bridge on Friday.

The premier along with her convoy drove around the bridge at 7:30am.

After attending a breakfast event arranged by the bridge authority at the Janzira point, Sheikh Hasina left the bridge area at around 10am.

Bangladesh is constructing the Padma Multipurpose Bridge, a road-rail bridge over the Padma River which will connect Mawa of Munshiganj and Jajira of Shariatpur, linking the south-west of the country, to northern and eastern regions.

Padma Bridge is considered to be the most challenging construction project in the history of Bangladesh. The two-level steel truss bridge will feature a four-lane highway on the upper level and a single track railway on a lower level.

It will be the longest — 6.150 km — bridge in Bangladesh, and the longest over Ganges in terms of both span and the total length. The maximum depth of pile of this bridge is 122 metre, which is highest among all other bridges.

The project took off in December 2014 before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated work on the main bridge a year later.

In December 2020, the bridge came into full view with the installation of 41 spans in 42 piers stretching 150 metres.

The final slab was installed in August this year.

The project is supposed to be wrapped up by June next year as per the latest revised plan.
