Police in an overnight drive arrested a former lawmaker of Thakurgaon-2 constituency Dabirul Islam from an Awami League (AL) leader's residence at Ruhea under Sadar upazila here.
"Dabirul, a seven-times lawmaker, was arrested from a residence of AL leader Alamgir Hossen at Ramnath bazaar in Ruhea around 2.30 am in an extortion case", said police super Sheikh Shahidul Islam, reports BSS.
Dabirul and his son Majharul Islam Sujon are the prime accused in the extortion case filed against twenty-eight persons on September 3.
He along with other accused demanded Taka 10 crore as extortion from Habibul Islam Babul as he owned 90 acres of land through purchasing at Beurjari in Baliadangi upazila, said the FIR of the case.
Babul later filed an extortion case against them.
Another case was filed against Dabirul over burning 4 leaders of BNP and its other associate organisations to death in the Thakurgaon road area on August 5.
The ex-lawmaker is supposed to be produced before the court.
