Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Habibur Rahman on Thursday warned that the police can stop any malpractice and syndicate in the markets.

“Police are active to stop any illegal activities including syndication in the market,” he said this while addressing a discussion with the representatives of business organizations at the DMP Headquarters.

The meeting was organized to find out the reasons for the abnormal price hike of daily necessities and essential commodities. The discussion was held with the business leaders in the metropolitan area where representatives from the commerce ministry, directorate of national consumers' rights protection, two city corporations and police departments were present.

“The discussion revealed that there is no shortage of goods in the market, adequate goods are available in the stock and supply. There is no reason to create a crisis. But in some cases crisis has been created in the markets due to vested interests,” the DMP Commissioner added.

The DMP chief said, “The government is always sincere in controlling the prices of the essentials in the markets. Prime Minister herself is constantly enquiring the price of the essential products, finding out whether there is any problem somewhere.”

“Today we are discussing with all to prevent any kind of ill attempt in the markets. DMP is active to root out any syndicate and any ill motive. The DMP has the ability to remove any syndicate,” he stated.

Habibur Rahman also said that the DMP will also participate in the market monitoring along with the Ministry of Commerce, Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection and City Corporations.

Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar and officials of various intelligence agencies, Special Branch, Fire Service, Ministry of Commerce, Rapid Action Battalion, Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, Dhaka South and North City Corporations and trade leaders were present.
