A team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has seized the lysergic acid diethylamide drug, also known as LSD, for the first time in Bangladesh.
Iftekhairul Islam, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) media and public relations department confirmed the matter.
He said the Ramna division of the DMP recovered 200 pieces of the expensive and highly dangerous psychedelic drug LSD from a flat in the capital in a drive on Wednesday. Police also arrested three university students from the flat.
This is the first time the narcotic substance has been seized in the country, ADC Iftekhairul added.
The three arrestees are Lupal and Turja, students of North South University, and Adib, student of Independent University. They have been accused of being involved with selling LSD strips in Dhaka.
Sources at the Detective Branch (DB) of the DMP said they found a hint of selling and consumption of LSD while investigating the death of Hafizur Rahman, 24, a student of Dhaka University, which lead to the recovery of the drug and the arrests on Wednesday night.
AKM Hafiz Akhtar, additional commissioner of police of DB said the details of the raid, the recovered drug and the accused would be announced at a press conference on Thursday.
LSD is a hallucinogenic drug that typically alters thoughts, feelings, and awareness of one's surroundings.
Many users experience visual or auditory hallucinations, dilated pupils, increased blood pressure, and increased body temperature.
Effects typically begin within half an hour of taking LSD and can last for up to 20 hours.
