Police filed a case last night with Labanchara Police Station against 1200 people on charge of killing constable Sumon Kumar Gharami.

Mostafa Saklain, Sub-Inspector of the Police Station filed the case, but, none was arrested yet to this end, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Labanchara Police Station Momtazul Haque confirmed this to BSS on Saturday, reports BSS.

On Friday, a large number of people under the banner of the “anti-discrimination students movement” were involved in a fierce clash with police in different areas of the city.

The clash erupted when they swooped on police at Gallamary, a zero point area as the law enforcement agencies barricaded their mass procession, the OC said.

The processionists threw brickbats and attacked with bamboo sticks and iron rods targeting on-duty police. The law enforcement agencies responded with baton charges, sound grenades, tear gas shells and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.

During the clash, Police constable Sumon and 20 other police personnel sustained serious injuries. Later, they were rushed to Khulna City Medical College Hospital where Constable Sumon was declared dead.

His body was handed over to his family members today after an autopsy.
