Preparations are underway to take ailing Awami League leader and former health minister Mohammad Nasim to Singapore for better treatment, confirmed a source close to his family today (Thursday).
Nasim is currently undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
The BSMMU sources said after a 72-hour observation, a medical board of the hospital will take a decision today.
Earlier, on Wednesday night, BSMMU Vice Chancellor and chief of the medical board Prof Dr Kanak Kanti Barua said, “His (Nasim) condition is kind of stable now. If the family wants, he can be taken abroad by air ambulance for better treatment.”
A source close to the Awami League leader’s family said the family has intention to take Nasim abroad for better treatment.
Everything depends on the decision of the BSMMU medical board, said the source, adding that the family had already sent Nasim’s medical documents to Singapore for advice.
Earlier on June 1, Nasim tested positive for coronavirus after being admitted to the Bangladesh Specialised Hospital in the capital's Shyamoli area, with blood pressure problems and physical weakness. Later on June 5, his health condition deteriorated after he suffered a brain stroke while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Mohammad Nasim is a presidium member of the Awami League. He is also the spokesperson of 14 Awami League-led parties. After the 2014 parliamentary election, Mohammad Nasim became the health minister of the Awami League government. Earlier, he served in several ministries during the 1996-2001 Awami League government.
