President Md Abdul Hamid on Sunday asked everyone, irrespective of religion and caste, to work together in building a non-communal Bangladesh, envisioned by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

"Communal harmony is our eternal tradition and universally recognised. This tradition should be continued collectively," the president said while exchanging greetings with Christian community leaders on the occasion of Christmas Day at the Gallery Hall of Bangabhaban on Sunday.

The head of the state urged everyone to be vigilant so that no individual or quarter can break this bond of communal harmony anyway.

Referring to Jesus Christ as the guide of the right path of mankind, he said, in return for many sacrifices, he preached the glory of God and His message of Christianity.

Instead of worldly happiness, the president said Jesus Christ emphasized the attainment of eternal happiness through sacrifice, temperance and charity.

“Jesus also taught peaceful coexistence among people including love, service, forgiveness and justice,” the president added.

Noting that Bangladesh is a town of peace and prosperity, the President said behind this achievement is the relentless work and continuous efforts of all people, irrespective of religion and caste.

"The positive contribution of communal harmony to our development and progress is undeniable," he noted.

Meanwhile, Abdul Hamid hoped that the bond of friendship existing between all will deepen in days to come.

State Minister for Religious Affairs Faridul Haque Khan, Dhaka Archbishop Bejoy Nicephorus D'Cruz, President of Bangladesh Christian Association Nirmal Rosario and other community dignitaries and religious leaders attended the reception.
