Bangladesh’s president and prime minister have expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch.

The queen died on Thursday at the age of 96, after reigning for 70 years.

In a condolence message, President Md Abdul Hamid conveyed the deepest sympathy to members of the Royal Family at her death, reports BSS.

The head of the state also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who just returned home Thursday night after concluding a four-day state visit to India, offered Britain's royal family "heartfelt and deep sympathies" over the death of Queen Elizabeth II, her spokesman said.

The leader of the former British colony "offered her deep condolences and expressed her sorrow at the death of Queen Elizabeth II", her spokesman Hasan Jahid Tusher told AFP.

Bangladesh is a member of the Commonwealth and the queen, who headed the grouping largely made up of former British colonies, visited the country in 1983, just over a decade after it won independence from Pakistan.

Bangladesh and Britain enjoy warm ties with British aid agencies playing leading roles in some of the country's development projects.
