President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar on the outskirts of the capital early Thursday, marking the 51st Victory Day.

The head of the state placed the wreath at the altar of the National Memorial around 6:30am followed by the prime minister, reports BSS.

After placing the wreaths, they stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memories of the martyrs of the Great War of Liberation in 1971.

A smartly turned out contingent drawn from Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force presented a state salute on the occasion, as the bugles played the last post.

Flanked by senior leaders of the party, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the ruling Awami League, laid another wreath at the National Memorial.

Younger daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and prime minister’s younger sister Sheikh Rehana was also present there.

Both President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina signed the visitors’ book kept on the memorial premises.

Later, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and leaders of different political as well as socio-cultural organisations placed wreaths at the memorial to show respect to the memories of the war martyrs.

The nation is celebrating the 51st Victory Day, the most precious day of Bangalee people, as the country was liberated from the Pakistani occupation forces on the day in 1971 after a nine-month long bloodstained Liberation War.
