Pressure must continue to amend tobacco law: Mannan

Planning Minister MA Mannan has said that pressure must be exerted on all parties to amend the Smoking Tobacco Use (Control) Act to protect the health of future generations. 

The minister made the comment while addressing a national seminar on “Tobacco Control Law Amendment for Making Bangladesh Tobacco-Free by 2040,” organised by Bangladesh Parliament Forum for Health and Wellbeing at CIRDAP  on Thursday.

Former health minister Prof Dr AFM Ruhal Haque was the chief guest of the programme, which was presided by Prof Dr Habibe Milat.

The planning minister said, “We have to work for tobacco control. Continuous pressure must be maintained at all levels to amend the Tobacco Control Act. We have to move forward with the people. We have to implement the declaration of the prime minister.”

Meanwhile, AFM Ruhal Haque said, “You are aware of secondhand smoking. Multiple people can get affected by only one smoker. Especially young people and women are facing more problems in this regard.”

Dr Shamil Uddin Shimul, Adv Syeda Rubina Aktar, Aparajita Haque, Shabnam Jahan, Umme Fatema Nazma Begum also addressed the seminar.

Along with them NTCC Coordinator Hosain Ali Khondokar, delegates from ministries, anti-tobacco organizations, and numbers of NGOs and CSOs were also present at the event.
