The prices of chicken and various types of fish have come down while the prices of all kinds of vegetables have increased in the capital city over the last week. However, prices of beef, mutton and eggs have remained the same.
The information was found by this reporter of The Business Post while visiting various kitchen markets in the capital on Friday (July 10).
In the markets, broiler chickens are being sold at Tk140-145 per kg, down by Tk10-15 while the price of layer chickens has come down by Tk30 per kg. Red layer chicken is being sold at Tk220-225 per kg, white layer at Tk200 per kg, golden chicken at Tk250-260 per kg with a reduction of Tk20-30 and domestic chicken is being sold at Tk550-580 per kg.
Shahin Alam, a chicken trader at Karwan Bazar kitchen market said, chickens from several newly established farms are coming to market following shutdown of many farms due to the coronavirus epidemic. The price of chicken has come down due to increase in supply.
Prices of all types of fish have also dropped. Prices of fishes other than hilsa have been reduced from Tk10 to 30 per kg while the price of hilsa has dropped from Tk50 to 100 per kg. At present, a hilsa weighing one kg is being sold at Tk950-1000, a hilsa weighing 750 grams at Tk650-750 per kg, the ones weighing 500 grams at Tk500-550 per kg and the small ones are being sold at Tk320-450 per kg.
Habib, a fishmonger at Karwan Bazar, said there are fewer buyers than the amount of fish in the market now. The fall in demand has caused price reduction for fish in the wholesale markets, which has affected the retail markets as well. However, if there is a shortage of fish, the price will go up again, he added.
However, the price of eggs has remained unchanged. Eggs of red broiler chickens are being sold at Tk100-105 per dozen while domestic chicken eggs at Tk140-150 per dozen. Prices of beef and mutton also remained the same as before. Beef is being sold at Tk550-600 per kg and mutton at Tk800-900 per kg.
The price of vegetables has increased more than the last week. At present no vegetables are available below taka 50 per kg in the markets. Per kg asparagus bean is being sold at Tk60-70, snake gourd at Tk50-60, green papaya at Tk50-60, pointed gourd at Tk50, balsam apple at Tk70-80, ridge gourd at Tk50-60, arum at Tk40-60, sweet bitter gourd at Tk50-60 and a kg of potato is being sold at Tk32-35.
Besides, ripe tomatoes are being sold at Tk100-120 per kg, carrots at Tk60-100 per kg and cucumbers at Tk50-60 per kg while a kg of green chilli is being sold at Tk180-200.
