The government has taken a pilot programme to provide milk to 300 government primary schools in the country throughout the year so that the students can drink it free of cost during the 'Tiffin' period.

The programme will run under the Livestock and Dairy Development Project (LDDP) at the initiative of the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry, an official release said on Sunday.

Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim inaugurated the 'School Milk Programme' in a function as the chief guest on Islamia Government Primary School premises in the city's Tejgaon area, the release added.

The programme will start in 50 schools immediately and it will be implemented gradually in other schools within this year.

In 61 districts, milk will be provided during the 'Tiffin' period to all students from class one to class five of primary schools selected by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.

Milk will be distributed on the days when the schools remain open.
