A female student of a private university died after a bus hit a motorcycle in the capital’s Bhatara area on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Nadia, 22, a first-semester student at the pharmacy department of Northern University Bangladesh. She hails from Fatullah in Narayanganj.
The local police seized the bus, but the driver and conductor of the bus fled the scene soon after the incident.
As the news of Nadia’s reached her campus, several hundred students of Northern University went out on demonstration blocking the busy Airport Road near Kawla footbridge. The angry students demanded justice for Nadia and ensured a safe road for all.
The students’ demonstration triggered severe traffic gridlock in the area.
Police and eyewitness said Nadia was the pillion rider of her friend Mehadi Hasan’s motorcycle when a Malibagh-bound bus of Victor Paribahan hit the bike near Jamuna Future Park around 12:45pm.
The police said Nadia came to Jamuna Future Park on a motorcycle with her friend Mehdi Hasan who is also a student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the same university.
After the incident, the police also interrogated the victim’s friend, Mehadi Hasan, over the incident.
Bhatara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) ABM Asaduzzman said a university student died on the spot after a Victor Paribahan bus hit her.
The body of the deceased was sent to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for autopsy, he added.
