The death toll from Sunday’s fire at an apartment in Gulshan-2 increased to two as another victim died on Monday morning.

Raju Mia Shikder, who sustained injuries during the fire incident, died at a hospital in the capital, said Deputy Commissioner (Gulshan division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Abdul Ahad.

22 people – nine men, 12 women, and one child –were rescued, Dhaka Metropolitan Police DC (Gulshan Division) Abdul Ahad confirmed the matter.

A five-member probe committee has been formed over the fire that tore through an apartment block in the capital's Gulshan area Sunday evening.

Lt Col Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, director (operations and maintenance) of Fire Service and Civil Defence is head of the committee, Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brig Gen Md Moin Uddin told UNB on Monday.

Other members of the committee include the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters' deputy director (operations and maintenance), assistant director, deputy assistant director of Gulshan Zone, and officer-in-charge of the local fire station.

Later, the army and air force also joined the rescue operation and the fire was brought under control after four hours.
