A Dhaka court has fixed April 20 for submission of a probe report in a case lodged against Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, four other people and Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital on a charge of negligence in providing treatment to a pregnant woman who died on September 24 last year.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Sikder fixed the new date as the investigation officer concerned failed to submit the probe report on Monday (March 1).
Earlier on January 25, a Dhaka court fixed March 1 for the submission of the investigation report against Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury and four others.
The case was filed against Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury and four others on December 22, 2020, over the woman's death. Others accused in the case are Gonoshasthaya Kendra physician Dr Nasrin, Dr Shawkat Ali Arman, Dr Delowar Hossain and Nurse Shangkari Rani Sarkar.
Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital was later added as an accused in the case.
The deceased’s husband SA Alam Sabuj filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Deb Das Chandra Adhikari.
The court directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the matter and submit reports within January 21.
According to the case statement, on September 24, 2020, Nasrin Aktar was admitted as a patient in the hospital.
The patient's relatives called intern doctors and nurses when Nasrin was struggling with labour pain but they failed to provide proper care. Two doctors were called to attend to the patient but they did not turn up.
The patient’s relatives requested painkillers and saline but Shangkari Rani, the nurse, delivered the baby, a girl, without any painkiller.
Although the baby survived, the mother's life ended tragically shortly afterwards due to excessive blood loss.
