Investigation will reveal whether the Chattogram container depot fire was an accident or sabotage, Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud said on Sunday.

“Investigations are on to detect the real reason behind the devastating fire at BM container depot in Sitakunda,” he said, reports UNB.

The prime minister herself is looking after the matter and she instructed all concerned to provide necessary support, said Hasan while speaking at a meeting with Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB).

At least 49 people died and hundreds were injured as a fire sparked a huge chemical explosion at the shipping container depot.

Confirming the death toll, Elias Chowdhury, regional chief doctor, told AFP that the number of dead would likely increase.

Nine firefighters have also perished in the incident so far, according to the Media Cell of the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

The fire started on Saturday night at the depot, which stores around 4,000 containers, many filled with garments destined for Western retailers.

Two committees have already been formed to investigate the blaze and blasts.
