Prof Abul Khair Mohammad Shamsuzzaman died of Covid-19 at Sheikh Russell National Gastroliver Institute and Hospital in the capital in the early hours of Saturday.
He was the director of the National Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Referral Center (NILMRC).
Confirming the matter to the media, the hospital's Director Prof Dr Farooq Ahmed said, "As a result of Covid-19 infection, Shamsuzzaman's lungs were damaged. Doctors declared him dead at around 7 am today."
He also had diabetes, pressure and obesity along with old age complications, Dr Farook added.
Earlier on April 10, Prof Shamsuzzaman was admitted to the hospital after being diagnosed with Covid-19. He was later transferred to the ICU as his condition deteriorated.
Prof Dr AKM Shamsuzzaman was a former student of Rajdhani Medical College. He also served as the Director of the Disease Control Branch of the Department of Health and the Director of Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control And Research.
He had also been the director of NILMRC since its inception.
NILMRC has been playing an important role in testing Covid-19 samples since the onset of coronavirus infection.
