Protesting NBR officials disperse after army assurance

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) officials – after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government – have been demanding the resignation of Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem and other corrupt officials due to their involvement with rampant irregularities.

Board officials from grade-10 to grade-20 gathered from various locations on Thursday in front of the city’s NBR Bhaban, and underlined different irregularities including intimidation by the chairman, irregularities in hiring, transfer and trade promotions, withholding retirement benefits, and supporting illegal activities, such as smuggling and looting.

Four vehicles from the Bangladesh Army arrived at NBR building and assured them of cooperation in this regard.

Army personnel told the protesters that the country is dealing with a critical situation, and any such protests will only make things more complicated. Please submit a written statement outlining your concerns, and the army will make sure the message gets to the right people.

After receiving this assurance from the Bangladesh Army, the protesting NBR officials dispersed. However, few of them were not convinced by it.

In the meantime, Dhaka Taxes Zone-6 Commissioner Md Lutful Azeem asked them to have patience, and they eventually left the area.
