Public transport movement will be suspended from Monday as part of a seven-day nationwide lockdown to stem the spread of coronavirus, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said.
Quader also the general secretary of the Awami League made the announcement at a media briefing at his residence on Sunday morning.
However, important services, including food supplies, daily commodities, perishable items, fuel, medicine, transport related to medicine, agriculture goods, fertilisers, fisheries, animal and livestock, baby foods, newspaper and essential items will continue as usual, he added.
The government is set to announce the seven-day nationwide lockdown from Monday amid a surge in COVID-19 cases and fatalities in Bangladesh.
The death toll from the novel coronavirus climbed to 9,213 in Bangladesh after 58 more deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours till 8:00am on Saturday.
Besides, 5,683 people tested positive for the virus during the same period bringing its total tally to 630,277.
