All types of public transports resumed operation at full capacity on Wednesday as a countrywide strict lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19 ends after 19 days.
According to a Cabinet Division circular issued on August 8, buses, trains and launches would resume carrying passengers at full capacity from Wednesday.
However, transport owners were directed to limit the number of their operational vehicles per day to 50 per cent of the total number on all roads.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) issued a notification on Tuesday reinstating regular bus fares from Wednesday, reconfirming that buses would carry passengers at full capacity.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) also revoked its previous order on the same day that hiked passenger fares by 60 per cent.
However, it would be difficult to ensure 50 per cent vehicular movement as it is yet to be determined exactly how many vehicles each of the owners posses and how many of them are currently operational across the country, Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association's General Secretary Khandaker Enayet Ullah said.
"This decision will leave a large number of transport workers without a job. Transport owners will also face immense losses because of this," he added.
