Road transport and bridge minister Obaidul Quader's younger brother and mayor of Basurhat municipality Abdul Quader Mirza, allegedly led a mob beating of Companiganj Upazila Awami League president Khizir Hayat Khan on Monday.
The incident happened at upazila AL's party office in Bashurhat Bazar around afternoon.
Fakhrul Islam Rahat, nephew of Quader Mirza but a leader of Khizir Hayat Khan's group, said Khizir has been recently opposing the politics of Quader Mirza, and that is why the enraged mayor led this attack.
Currently Khizir is admitted in the hospital, said Rahat.
Quader Mirza's nephew complained, an armed group attacked the upazila AL president led by Quader Mirza and his brother Shahadat Hossain.
He claimed during the attack the armed group also held upazila BSL's general secretary Shah Farhad Lingkon at municipality office and ran a showdown at the bazar.
Khizir Hayat Khan complained as he was alone in the party office Quader Mirza at first pulled him by the collar, harassed and started beating him. At one point Quader's more than hundred supporters pulled him outside into the bazar and beat him blue like a thief.
Khizir Hayat Khan claimed police has paid no heed to his complaint against the incident.
Abdul Quader Mirza didn't receive the UNB reporter's call. Some other man receiving the call said no attack was conducted by Mirza.
Comapniganj police station's Officer-in-Charge, Mir Jahedul Haque Rony also didn't receive the call when contacted.
