Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Wednesday said his office has taken a step so that rainwater even after a heavy fall can runoff within 15 minutes in the DSCC areas during the monsoon.

"In the first year of my tenure, we became successful to make the rainwater runoff within an hour. Last year (2022), we could manage it within half an hour and even after cyclone Sitrang there was no water logging anywhere in Dhaka except in nine places," he said.

The mayor added: "This year, our target is to get the people of Dhaka relived from the water logging within 15 minutes even if it rains heavily".

Taposh said this while exchanging views with journalists after visiting cleanliness activities at a canal adjacent to Rankin Street in the city's Wari area.

Due to cleaning the canals, drains and box culverts regularly as per the annual schedule, extraction of rainwater has become easy, he said.

The mayor sought cooperation from the city dwellers and urged them to be aware of mitigating water logging, saying, "Everything from pieces of wood and tiles, commodes, pillows, footballs and plastic products are found in the canals. Please, don't throw these things to canals since the channels are designated for water extraction".

Earlier, Taposh visited the Kajla canal under 63 no ward, final cricket match of 3rd Dhaka Mayor Cup Inter Ward Sports Competition 2023 and the development works of the Buriganga River.

DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Mizanur Rahman, Secretary Akramuzzaman, Transport General Manager Md Hayder Ali and Chief Estate Officer Rasel Sabrin were present on the occasions, among others.
