Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha (RAJUK) on Tuesday has decreed the demolition of 42 state buildings that are prone to earthquakes and has obligated the authorities to vacate the buildings by 7 days upon receiving the notice.

The buildings include 30 buildings belonging to the Education Engineering Department, four belonging to Jagannath University, 3 belonging to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), one of the Madrasah Education Board buildings, and another belonging to the Primary Education Department.

RAJUK also decreed the consolidation of 187 buildings of the Primary Education Department.

Based on a recent RAJUK-abetted survey dubbed Urban Resilience Project (URP), 3,252 state buildings around the capital precariously stand and hence are ordered to be torn down.

“We mailed written decrees out to the authorities concerned apprising them that the buildings are at-risk. And they have been apprised to vacate those buildings by 7 days,” RAJUK Chairman, Md Anisur Rahman Miah.

He said restoring these buildings is not cost-efficient which is why the authority is compelled to tear them down.

“Global prerequisites suggest if the restoration cost is higher than 30 per cent, then the buildings ought to be torn down. So the ones we decided to tear down incurs a cost of more than 30 per cent,” he added.
