Abdul Khaleque, owner of the collapsed Rana Plaza in Savar, died Thursday morning from Covid-19 at his home in the upazila.

Md Sayemul Huda, Health and Family Planning Officer of Savar upazila, confirmed this to the Business Post.

Khaleque was on bail in several cases lodged against him following the deaths of thousands of people in Rana Plaza collapse on April 24, 2013. Most of the casualties were workers of various garment factories housed in the building.

His son Sohail Rana is still in jail.

Abdul Khaleque's daughter Rawshan Ara said, Khaleque was taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar for treatment after he started to have breathing difficulties last Sunday. But the hospital authorities did not admit him as they were not sure of his infection.

Samples collected from him were submitted to Enam Medical College Hospital for testing on Monday.

The test results came positive on Thursday after Khaleque died. The hospital authorities confirmed Covid-19 as his cause of death.
