Police have arrested a young man on charges of hurting religious sentiments through a Facebook post that allegedly triggered arson attacks on Hindu homes in Rangpur.
“Poritosh Sarker was apprehended in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat around 8:00pm on Monday,” confirmed Assistant Superintendent of Police Kamruzzaman.
“The arrestee has been sued under the Digital Security Act and is being brought to Rangpur,” the police official added.
Earlier on Sunday night, at least 30 homes belonging to Hindu community were set on fire, vandalised and looted in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur over a reported Facebook post hurting religious sentiments.
Of late, the country has seen a number of sectarian attacks during and after the just concluded Durga Puja, following an alleged desecration of the Holy Quran at a puja mandap in Cumilla on October 13.
