A rape accused was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Bhadalia in Banshkhali municipality area early Monday (June 15).
The deceased was identified as Abdul Majid, 30, son of Ledu Mia of West Chechuria Ghonapara of the upazila. He is the prime accused in a gang-rape case filed with Banshkhali Police Station, said RAB.
Tipped off, a team of RAB-7 conducted a drive in the area early in the morning when Majid along with others were gathered there, said assistant superintendent of RAB-7 Mahmudul Hasan Mamun.
When RAB challenged them, they opened fire on the elite force members, forcing them to fire back.
At one stage, Majid was caught in the line of fire while the others managed to flee the scene.
Rezaul Karim Majumdar, officer-in-charge of Banshkhali Police Station, said Majid and his associates took a 19-year-old girl to a mango orchard at Boilcharri in the upazila on April 27 and violated the girl in turns.
Later, the victim's brother filed a case with Banshkhali Police Station.
One firearm and six bullets were recovered from the spot.
