Bangladeshi expat Rayhan Kabir, who was arrested in Malaysia after appearing in an Al Jazeera documentary, landed in Dhaka on a Malaysia Airlines flight MH-196 at 1:00am on Saturday (August 22).
His Father Shah Alam broke down in tears after finding his beloved son at the airport. He said,” "We were eagerly waiting for our son to come to us. He's here now. We have the Eid moon in our hands!"
When asked about how he felt, Rayhan replied “I can't explain this joy. How many times have I come and gone in the last six years! This time it feels different. My Bangladesh, my motherland, my mother, my parents… I can't explain this feeling to anyone. Gratitude to all of you. Gratitude to all who were by my side at home and abroad."
Rayhan was featured in the Al Jazeera documentary ‘Locked Up in Malaysia’s Lockdown’ that alleged the mistreatment of migrants by Malaysian authorities during the movement control order.
Rayhan’s work permit has since been revoked and the Malaysian immigration department said on Tuesday that he will be deported and blacklisted from entering Malaysia forever.
Rayhan was arrested by immigration officers on July 24 in Setapak following a two-week manhunt.
Later, on Wednesday, two lawyers representing Bangladeshi expatriate Md Rayhan Kabir said the country’s immigration has decided to deport Rayhan but will not press any charges against him.
