RCC mayor for expediting more cleanliness, conservancy works

Mayor of the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) AHM Khairuzzaman Liton on Saturday called for more expediting the cleanliness and conservancy works for the betterment of the city dwellers.

He said the city's cleanliness, conservancy and beautifications have already been reached to the global area crossing the country's boundary. The city has been turned into a beautified and green amid spontaneous support of the city dwellers.

Mayor Liton, who is also the presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League, underlined the need for upholding the present trend with collective efforts of all concerned particularly the conservancy officials and workers.

He came up with the observation while addressing a view-sharing meeting related to the conservancy and waste management of the city corporation held at its City Bhaban conference hall as chief guest.    

With Panel Mayor Shariful Islam Babu in the chair, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Chief Executive Officer Dr ABM Sharif Uddin, Ward Councilor Towhidul Haque, Chief Engineer Nur Islam and Chief Conservancy Officer Sheikh Muhammad Mamun.

Khairuzzaman Liton said a step has been taken to set up a separate landfill for modernizing the waste management activities. So far, 17 secondary transfer stations (STS) were constructed. In phases, STS will be set up one each in every ward.

The city corporation has been planning for modernisation of its wastes with the main thrust of ensuring a clean, tidy and odorless environment through alleviating harmful effects of wastes.

It's also intended to build up an effective waste management system through modernizing collection, transportation, removal, recycling, reuse and dumping besides multidimensional use of wastes from reuse.

To attain the cherished goals, the city corporation is now on the way of adopting a project titled "Modernization of Waste Management in Rajshahi City" as it's mandated to ensure odorless environment everywhere in the city like other cities in the country.

Around 104.33 acres of land at Baya-Duary area has been selected as site of the proposed project as there is no residence around the area.

The project has provision of various physical infrastructural development, particularly hygienic landfill, waste plants, approach roads for recycling plants and treatment plants, land development, boundary wall, slaughtering house, secondary transfer station and incineration plant.
