Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called upon the interim government to prioritise documentation of those killed and injured during the quota reform movement.

The organisation also demanded that the culprits involved in the killings, and those who ordered the killings, be brought to justice in a speedy manner.

Jamaat-e-Islami made the demands at a prayer ceremony on Saturday, organised to commemorate journalists Mehdi Hasan and Jahangir – who died amid wanton violence during the quota reform movement. The duo's families received financial support at the event.

Speaking at the event, Dhaka Times journalist Mehdi Hasan's wife Farhan Islam said, “My husband's body had many bullet wounds. His body had boot prints as well. I seek justice for my husband’s murder.”

Journalist Jahangir's wife Laiju said, “The police who shot him and those who ordered the killing must face justice.”

Dhaka Metropolitan South Jamaat Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul said, “More than a thousand people have been martyred, and they all wanted a happy and prosperous new Bangladesh.

“One of the key tasks of the interim government should be to prepare a list of martyrs and injured, and provide assistance to the victims and their families. If there is a mistake in considering priorities, the way forward could become risky.”

Announcing that the Jamaat-e-Islami will take responsibility for the children of these two martyrs until they become adults, Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said, “The killers must be brought to justice.

“The party will provide legal assistance to both these families to ensure fair trials.

Dr Shafiqur called upon everyone to work together so that fascism cannot rise again in Bangladesh. Later, financial assistance was handed over to the martyrs’ families.
