Shahed Karim alias Md Shahed, the main accused in the much-discussed Regent Hospital fraud case, has been brought to Dhaka by helicopter after being arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), said the RAB sources.
Shahed, owner and chairman of the Regent Hospital, was brought to the old airport of Tejgaon at 9 am on Wednesday, the sources said.
Additional director general (ADG) of RAB Colonel Tofayel Mustafa Sorwar said, "Shahed was arrested from the Satkhira border area at 5:10 am while trying to escape to India."
"Several touts, including Bachchu, who were involved in smuggling across the border by boat, were reportedly cooperating with Shahed. They will also be brought under the law," said the ADG.
"We'll interrogate Shahed," he said, adding the details will be announced at an unofficial press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier on 14 July, RAB also arrested Masud Parvez from Kapasia upazila of Gazipur. He is the managing director of Regent Hospital Ltd.
On the same day, a Dhaka court sent seven employees of Regent Hospital to jail after the end of their remand in the case.
On 7 July, RAB filed a case with Uttara Paschim Thana accusing Regent Hospital authorities of issuing fake coronavirus certificates. The lawsuit was filed against 17 people including Md Shahed, the chairman of Regent Group.
