Remittance inflow immune to Covid

Remittance sent by expatriate Bangladeshis continues to rise despite Covid-19 pandemic and in September, remittance inflow reached $2.15 billion which is 45 percent better than that of last year.

The amount remitted by expatriates in September last year was $1.46 billion dollars. Remittance in August was at $1.96 billion dollars.

With this, in the first 3 months of the current financial year, remittance inflow has been about $6 billion, that is about 49 percent more than the same period of the previous financial year.

The increase in remittance in Bangladesh has come as a surprise to economists at a time when the normal economy of the world is in turmoil due to the impact of coronavirus pandemic.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, told reporters the inward remittances were increasing because of the government incentives and simplification of regulations.

He said 49 per cent of remittances used to come through non-banking channels. It is now coming to the banking channel to increase the facilities.
