Even after weakening into a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday, Cyclone Jawad caused damages to many places in Bangladesh, especially the coastal areas.
The deep depression further weakened and a now low-pressure area lies over the Bay of Bengal. However, the sea remains turbulent due to the remnants of the cyclone. Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number three.
Jawad caused incessant rain across the country on Sunday and Monday, and the weather is expected to brighten from Tuesday. While the cyclone never came close the Bangladesh coast areas, it has nevertheless caused damages, especially to Amon and Robi crops.
Farmers in despair
A deluge of rain prompted by the cyclone has damaged Aman crops as well as several early harvested Robi crops in six unions under Rangabali upazila of Patuakhali district. Daulatkhan upazila in Bhola and Indurkani in Pirojpur were similarly affected. Potato fields ended up submerged for three consecutive days in six upazilas of Munshiganj, causing anguish to the farmers.
Tourists stranded
More than 1,000 tourists were stranded on St Martin’s Island due to the hostile weather caused by Cyclone Jawad. Around 200 of them returned to Teknaf by trawler, but 700 others are still stranded on the island. Pervez Chowdhury, Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) confirmed the matter.
Moreover, Dublar Char and adjacent islands were submerged as Cyclone Jawad cause a tidal surge. The resulting waterlogs caused dry fish Dry fish worth Tk 2 crores to be spoiled. In Khulna’s Koyra upazila, a dam burst and flooded Gatirgheri and Hariharpur villages, stranding more than 200 families.
