Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury on Monday pointed out that the situation is still not favourable to reopen educational institutions across the country.

Mohibul made the comment at a meeting with university teachers on the issue of Universal Pension Prottoy Scheme, held in the education ministry conference room at 4:30pm.

The minister added, “We have to discuss this particular matter with those who are responsible. At the moment, the situation [to open educational institutions] does not exist. Some students took to the streets on Monday.

“We currently do not have concrete information on how many students took to the streets or what the situation is. I will be able to comment further after getting these details.”

When asked whether there was any discussion about the opening of primary schools in the cabinet on Monday, the education minister said, "I will not comment on the matter right now. What was discussed there cannot be discussed outside.”

Prime Minister’s Education and Cultural Affairs adviser Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, President of the Parliamentary Committee on Education Ministry and former Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and other officials of the ministry were present at the meeting.

The teachers of about 39 public universities across the country went on a strike by shutting down classes and examinations from last July 1, demanding exclusion from the Universal Pension Scheme.

This programme began at the call of Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association. They previously had a meeting with Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on the issue. But as no solution came, they resumed their movement.
