The design of the Bus Rapid Transit has been revised to facilitate movement of a large number of vehicles on Gazipur to Mohakhali route, saving an estimated Tk 41 crore, sources at the planning commission say.

Contractors will now construct i-girder instead of box girder as the latter takes up more space, sources told The Business Post.

The Bangladesh Bridge Authority, Roads and Highways Department and the Local Government Engineering Department are jointly implementing the project.

BRT project director Liakot Ali said that the design revision would save Tk 41 crore.

Meanwhile, the initial cost of the ‘Greater Sustainable Urban Development Project, BRT (Gazipur to Airport)’ was estimated at Tk 2,040 crore. This was revised in 2016 and the cost almost doubled to Tk 4,268 crore.

The project was expected to be completed in November 2016. However, the authorities extended the deadline several times aiming to finish works within June 2020. But with about two-thirds of the project incomplete, the deadline has been extended again by two more years. Contractors will get until June 2022 to finish the project.
