Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin on Sunday urged the rich to come forward to help the destitute people as much as they can in the month of Ramadan, while the government is doing it in various ways.

As per the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, instead of organising iftar parties this Ramadan, the money should be distributed among needy people, he said while addressing a programme at the Baralekha Upazila Parishad Auditorium in Moulvibazar.

At the event, Shahab Uddin distributed 5kg of seeds and 20kg of fertilisers free of cost to each of 3,000 small and marginal farmers under the Aush incentive programme, Tk 6 lakh among female trainees and beneficiaries, tablet computers (tab) among 186 meritorious students of classes 9 and 10 under government/MPO-based schools as a gift from the prime minister, and Tk 9.50 lakh cheques among 19 patients of cancer, kidney, cardiac diseases, paralysed and thalassaemia from the Department of Social Services.

Besides, the minister also distributed Tk 2.20 lakh among needy people from his personal initiative.

He said the government has introduced modern farming systems in the country and is providing adequate incentives to the farmers. As a result, the country is now self-sufficient in food.

“As an educated mother can give birth to an educated nation, the government is providing allowance and training for the development of all mothers.”

He said as students will play a leading role in the formation of “Smart Bangladesh,” meritorious students of the country are being gifted tabs by the government.

Mentioning that the world is surprised by Bangladesh’s development, Shahab said Awami League must be brought back to power to maintain the continuity of development.
