A Barguna court on Wednesday set September 30 to deliver the verdict on a case filed over the murder of Rifat Sharif.

Barguna District and Sessions Court Judge Md Asaduzzaman passed the order regarding the verdict on the 10 adult accused in the sensational case after hearing arguments on behalf of Rifat's wife Ayesha Siddiqa Minni, one of the accused, on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the court recorded deposition in favour of one of the accused after recording testimonies of 76 witnesses in the case. Later, lawyers of all parties concerned presented their arguments for and against all 10 accused.

The court finally fixed the date for the verdict after hearing arguments in favour of Minni.

Trial proceedings of the Rifat murder case resumed on August 10 due to being halted over the coronavirus pandemic for five long months.

Rifat Sharif, 22, was hacked to death on June 26, 2019, in front of Barguna Government College in broad daylight, with his wife Ayesha Siddiqua Minni being present on the spot.

A murder case was filed by Rifat’s father with the Barguna Sadar police station the next day.

On September 1, 2019, police submitted two separate charge-sheets against 10 adults, including Minni, and 14 juveniles.

Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayon Bond, the main accused, was killed in a reported gunfight with police on July 2.

Only Minni is currently on bail among the adults accused in this case. The High Court on August 29 granted bail to her on condition that she would remain in her father's custody and refrain from talking to the media.
