Rizwana, UN team discuss advancing human rights

Adviser to the interim government on environment, forest, and climate change Syeda Rizwana Hasan held a meeting on Tuesday with a delegation led by Asia-Pacific Division Chief of the United Nations Human Rights Organization Rory Mungoven. 

During the meeting, held at the Bangladesh Secretariat, Rizwana and the delegation discussed issues related to crimes and human rights violations committed during the anti-discrimination student movement in Bangladesh.  

The discussions focused on potential areas of collaboration between the United Nations and the Government of Bangladesh to ensuring the protection of human rights. 

Rizwana highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts in environmental conservation and protection of human rights. She emphasised Bangladesh's commitment to protecting human rights in Bangladesh. 

Mungoven commended Bangladesh's initiatives and reiterated the United Nations' support in advancing human rights agendas in the region. He emphasized the need for continued dialogue and partnership to strengthen the capacity of institutions in addressing these challenges. 

Both parties expressed a strong interest in working closely together to uphold human rights in Bangladesh. 

Asia Pacific Section Human Rights Officer Livia Cosenza, OHCHR Human Rights Officer Alexander James Amir El Jundi, and UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Bangladesh Senior Human Rights Adviser Huma Khan were also present on the occasion.
