Ready-made garments (RMG) workers set a truck on fire and vandalised at least 40 vehicles, blocking the Dhaka-Tangail highway, after the factory's securty guard died in a road accident in Kaliakoir’s Chandra area of Gazipur on Sunday morning.
The deceased is Azadul Haque, 35, of Gaibandha. He was a security guard at Mahmud Jeans.
“A worker died as a bus hit him while crossing the highway around 7:50am,” the factory manager Golam Mahmud confirmed the matter to The Business Post.
Mahmud Jeans Security In-Charge Abu Taher Faruqui said Azadul was charged with assisting the workers to cross the highway. As he was helping other workers to cross the road, he signalled the vehicles to stop but a truck sped up, ignoring the signal, and ran over him.
“The workers set the truck on fire as the driver managed to flee,” Faruqui said.
“A group of about 10,000 employees from Mahmud Jeans and the nearby Noor Group gathered on the Dhaka-Tangail highway with the body and vandalised at least 40 vehicles,” he added.
