Traffic on Tejgaon-Mohakhali roads in Dhaka came to a halt for over two hours on Tuesday as the workers of two ready-made garment factories blocked the Nabisco intersection protesting layoffs and demanding payment of their dues.
The RMG workers of Stitchwell Designs Ltd and Apparel Stitch Ltd took to the streets around 8:45am today.
Mohammad Harun-Ur-Rashid, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Tejgaon division, confirmed the matter to the media saying around 100 workers blocked the Nabisco crossing on Tuesday morning, causing massive traffic congestion on the roads from Tejgaon to the airport and adjoining areas.
Police requested the demonstrators to clear off the streets, but the garment workers refused to leave and continued their protest, he said.
At one point, workers scuffled with police, prompting the law enforcers to go into action on the protesters, the deputy commissioner added.
Police dispersed the protesters and brought the situation under control around 11am, clearing off the roads.
