475 killed, 605 injured in Nov road accidents

In a concerning report by Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, November witnessed a total of 566 road accidents claiming 475 lives and leaving 605 injured.

Simultaneously, 31 accidents on railways was reported in the month resulting in 23 deaths and 25 injuries, while maritime accidents accounted for 6 incidents, causing 5 deaths, with 1 person still missing.

The data on roads, railways, and waterways revealed a staggering 603 accidents, leading to 503 deaths and 630 injuries, as per the statement from Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity on Tuesday.

Motorcycle accidents took a grim toll, with 147 incidents resulting in 173 deaths and 85 injuries, constituting 25.97 per cent of total accidents, 30.56 per cent of the death toll, and 15.01 per cent of injuries.

Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of road accidents with 183 incidents, causing 115 deaths and 138 injuries, while Sylhet Division reported the lowest with 22 accidents resulting in 16 deaths and 26 injuries.

The Accident Monitoring Cell's monitoring report, compiled by Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, was released in a press statement signed by its Secretary General Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury.

Among the victims, 21 were law enforcement members, 133 were drivers, 54 pedestrians, 20 were transport workers, 67 students, 3 teachers, 64 women, 44 children, 2 journalists, 2 doctors, 1 lawyer, 2 pedestrians, 1 freedom fighter, and 12 politicians from various parties.

The casualties included 4 police officers, 2 doctors, 2 journalists, 1 lawyer, 1 freedom fighter, 2 pedestrians, 106 drivers from various transport, 45 pedestrians, 51 women, 32 children, 36 students, 13 transport workers, 3 teachers, and 7 politicians from various political parties.

The report collected information on 827 vehicles involved in road accidents, revealing that 20.79 per cent were motorcycles, 27.44 per cent were trucks, pickups, and vans, 34.62 per cent were buses, 10.51 per cent were battery-operated rickshaws and easy bikes, 6.52 per cent were CNG-run autorickshaws, 5.56 per cent were Nasiman-Kariman-Mahindra-tractor and Leguna, and 5.32 per cent were cars, jeeps, and microbuses.

Vehicle overturning accounted for 40.81 per cent of accidents, head-on collisions for 13.95 per cent, losing control and falling into a ditch for 10.24 per cent, various reasons for 34.62 per cent, and collisions with non-motorised vehicles for 0.35 per cent.

Analysing accident types, 42.57 per cent occurred on national highways, 19.74 per cent on regional highways, and 21.55 per cent on feeder roads.

Additionally, 13.04 per cent of all accidents occurred in Dhaka metropolitan city, 2.65 per cent in Chattogram metropolitan city, and 0.35 per cent at railway crossings.
