As many as 554 lives were lost while 747 people were injured in 463 road accidents across the country in the month of November, according to a report.

Besides, at least five people were killed and two went missing in three waterway accidents while 11 people killed and four others were injured in eight train accidents during this period.

Road Safety Foundation, an organisation that campaigns for safer roads, on Sunday revealed the data in a new report on accidents in Bangladesh’s roads this year.

The report was prepared based on accident news published by seven national dailies, five online news portals, and electronic media.

In November, motorcycle accidents turned out to be the deadliest one as those alone caused the death of 229 people, which is 41.33 per cent of the total deaths.

The total number of motorcycle accidents was 194 during the last month, which is 41.90 per cent of the total accidents.

According to the findings, at least 123 pedestrians were killed in road accidents, which account for 22.20 per cent of the total deaths.

Some 79 drivers and their assistants were also subjected to road fatalities and that is 14.25 per cent of the total deaths.

Last October, 482 people were killed in 427 road accidents. As such, the fatalities increased by 14.93 per cent in November. An average of 19 people were killed every day in November.

The Road Safety Foundation pointed out 10 major reasons behind the increasing number of road accidents. Those are using faulty vehicles, reckless driving, desperate attitude, incompetence and illnesses of drivers, unsettled wages and working hours, movement of low-speed vehicles on highways, reckless motorcycling by youths, the tendency of flouting traffic rules, poor traffic management, lack of efficiency of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and extortion in the transport sector.
