Police arrested the main accused in a case filed over the hijacking and gang rape of a passenger in a moving bus in Tangail on Thursday.

The main accused, Raja Mia, was apprehended from the new bus stand area of Tangail city, Tangail Superintendent of Police (SP) Sarkar Mohammad Kaysar confirmed the matter.

“After the bus robbery and gang-rape incident in Madhupur, the police started operation to find the miscreants in different areas. Raja Mia was arrested in an early morning raid at the bus stand area. We are trying to arrest the others,” SP Kaysar said.

In the early hours of Wednesday, a group of robbers raped a female passenger after hijacking the bus. Later, one of the passengers filed a case of rape and robbery with the police station on Wednesday afternoon.

Madhupur police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mazharul Amin said, “The bus with around 25 on board was going to Dhaka from Kushtia. On the way, a group of 10-12 robbers with backpacks boarded the bus in Sirajganj around midnight.

“They took control of the bus after crossing the Bangabandhu Bridge and tied up the passengers at gunpoint, looted valuables including cash and gold ornaments from them.”

“Then they gang raped a female passenger. The bus was under their control for three hours, driving around different places. Later, the miscreants ran away after overturning the bus in a sand pit near the Raktipara Jame Masjid of Madhupur upazila,” he added.

“The rape victim is now undergoing treatment at the Tangail General Hospital,” the OC said.
