S Alam asked to compensate each Banshkhali victim with Tk 5 lakh

The High Court on Tuesday directed the S Alam Group to compensate each of the workers killed in the April 17 violence at Banshkhali coal-fired power plant in Chattogram with Tk 5 lakh.

The court also asked the government to explain why it would not be asked to compensate the victims and ensure the security of the villagers and why the state party would not be declared a failed entity to ensure the safety and security of power plant workers and villagers.

The court asked the police and Chattogram district administration to submit their investigation reports before the court in 45 days.

Hearing separate writ petitions filed by six organisations, the bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir passed the order.

On April 17, five people were killed and scores injured in a clash between police and workers at a coal-fired power plant in west Boroghona of Gondamara Union in Banshkhali.

Two separate cases – one by the police and another by the power plant authority – were filed in this regard with Banshkhali police station.

Around 2,500 unidentified persons were made accused in the case filed the police and the coordinator of the power plant in his case accused 22 persons along with 40-50 more unidentified people.
