The prime minister’s former private industry and investment adviser and the current MP for the Dhaka-1 (Dohar-Nawabganj) constituency, Salman F Rahman, has won with a record margin in the 12th parliamentary election.

Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) Kamrul Hasan Sohel of Nawabganj Upazila and Returning Officer (RO) Zakir Hossain of Dohar Upazila announced his victory on Sunday night.

According to the results, Salman won with 1,50,005 votes from a total of 184 centres while his rival Salma Islam, a Jatiya Party candidate, received 34,930 votes with the plough symbol.

After being elected unofficially, Salman told reporters, "The prime minister had promised that this election would be free, fair, and impartial. Keeping her word, this constituency had a completely transparent election.”

“My main opponent was a former MP of this constituency. She went door-to-door with her development activities, and I also asked for votes by talking about my development activities. The people of Dohar-Nawabganj have once again reposed their trust in me. I will keep my promises and will rebuild this constituency,” he said.

The total number of voters in the Dhaka-1 constituency is 5,13,605.
