Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Thursday said that Awami League and BNP have to follow the same conditions to hold rallies in Dhaka.

"There can be no trouble on the streets, and no public inconvenience," he said.

"If they do not hold rallies in accordance with the law, the law enforcement agencies will perform their assigned duties," the minister added while replying to a question from journalists at a press conference marking International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at the Secretariat.

The minister also said that permission has not yet been given for where the rallies will be held.

While replying to a question regarding Awami League and BNP’s announcements to hold rallies in Baitul Mukarram and Naya Paltan respectively, the home minister said, "We have heard of it. And if they are adamant about holding rallies at those places, we will lay out some conditions for both parties."

"The police commissioner is in charge of the permission. He'll decide what to do.”

Asked if he sees any threat of violence over the rallies tomorrow, the minister said the government has no restrictions on politicians and political parties from carrying out their programmes.

“But they should follow the rules and regulations and the laws of the land. We will appeal to them not to create a public nuisance. I would urge them not to cause public suffering,” he said.

He called on both parties not to stop vehicular movement on the roads and not to engage in vandalism.
